In three days, my mom turns 94.

If she makes it.

As I sit here writing, I get text messages of the latest developments — she’s having trouble swallowing so they’re going to do a barium study of her esophagus, throat, and mouth. She no longer has a UTI, but she has a stone and urine backing up into her kidneys.

At least her COVID test was negative. (Unlike mine.)

Thank God my sister, niece, and I were just there for a visit.

She was in the hospital then as well. But this time fairs much worse.

I’ve been praying, praying, praying, but not sure what to pray for besides the best and the highest for everyone involved. And blessing everyone involved — her, her caregivers, all of our family, and the folks at her assisted living center.

And for all of our writers here, many of whom are going through or reliving similar times of change and loss. It’s all part of the cycle of life, even if knowing that doesn’t make it any easier.

Please God, may whatever happens be gentle. For all of us.
