Mother Earth Is Not Our Mommy

Do we treat the Earth like a mommy?

Like a mom, does Earth maintain an imaginary basket of endless resources, like a giant purse full of everything we need to fulfill our happiness?

Are we relating to Mother Nature and Mother Earth like an unconditional all-giving Mom?

Most children grow up and learn to give back to mom and dad.

We learn to have a meaningful relationship with our parents.

We learn to cook for them or invite them to a meal instead of expecting them to continue feeding us through our adult lives.

We learn appreciation and gratitude.

Are we failing to learn that about our planet?

Are we giving back to the Earth?

Are we protecting the Earth and her resources?

Are we “using our words” to speak or write with protective voices on her behalf?

Or are we expecting more and more and more?

Maybe associating Earth with mother is an unfortunate fail.

1. Moms provide. Moms give us everything. If a child wants a pony, a mom will do her best to accommodate. The Earth, like a mom, is not unlimited and we cannot keep taking taking taking taking and expecting that resources will magically replenish.

2. Moms support us. Look at the economy of natural resources. What is baffling is that humans profit from water, natural gas, fish, flowers, and lumber, but those resources come from the Earth. Even worse, we cannot manage these resources with public safety considerations. An example is fishing debris, like nets, that is left in the ocean and is a safety hazard for marine life and humans.

3. Moms clean up after us. Can we continue to dump our plastic trash into the ocean? Can we visit a clean beach after the 4th of July? Should we irresponsibly leave all our beach party plastic trash on the sand? Can we fail to clean up our oil spills or discard fishing garbage in the water?

4. Moms warm and dry us if we are wet and cold. They make sure we are always comfortable. By destroying the atmosphere and ignoring/contributing to climate change, are we contributing to impossible weather extremes? Do we expect that Earth will merrily carry on, like a mom who’s sick but takes care of everyone anyway, wearing a smile?

When we share graphics and photos that say, “Protect Mother Earth.” Instead, we often act like she can continue giving and giving and giving.

Can we net all the Aquatic Creatures?

Can we cut all the Forests and Trees?

Can we dump all our plastic and toxic rubbish?

Can we poison all our water, on a planet that is 71% water?

Every person has a mother. Nobody is independent of female energy.

As the world learns to treat women better, perhaps we can treat Mother Earth better.

“The excuse or toleration of cruelty upon any living creature by a woman is a deadly sin against the grandest force in nature — maternal love..” Elizabeth Blackwell

What about Mother Ocean?

Listen up! My newest song, Gordon Blues, is here with a message from Mother Ocean:

Gordon Blues Lyrics:

Climate crisis
Profits unrighteous
Wildfires rage
Extinction age

Jungle rainy Gordon Blues
Ocean stroll barefoot no shoes
Coco whipped cream whitecaps muse
Inhale breeze turn off the news

Tropical depression lows
Plastic beachcrap cuts my toes
Flowers stretch, curry wind blows
Escape boundaries predispose

Jungle rainy Gordon Blues
Ocean stroll barefoot no shoes
Coco whipped cream whitecaps muse
Inhale breeze turn off the news

Beach green straws
All-you-can-eat claws
Safe for dolphin?
Lunchbox of sins
Shark fin menu?
Earth Day, F*CK YOU

Tradition bougainvillea past
Stale thorns bind the enthusiast
Empath brain fog overcast
Ocean’s dying help her fast

Medium-ites, I know I know. I wrote Mother Ocean right into this song, because she is always Mother Ocean to me. She is powerful, kind, inviting, beautiful yet fierce. How can we help her?

We can listen, write, and read, but what else can we do? The first step is to learn more. Here are some movies you can watch to get you started:
