The other day I gave a writing workshop to 5th graders…at the end of the school day.

Here’s a little math equation:

writing + preteens + end-of-a-full-day-of-school= CHAOS🤯

I shared the students’ poor behavior with the Head of the After School Program.

The following visit, a completely different group of 5th graders were engaged in the workshop.

What changed?🤔

When I shared the rewarding experience with the Head of the After School Program, she nodded her head ferociously, reminiscent of a character out of a Good Fellas.

“Good. I told them they better behave. I said, you can’t misbehave like that to Miss Sheri. She’s an older woman. It takes a lot for her to come all this way to help you with your writing.”

Hearing the early twenty-something, well-meaning young woman say those four words brought on a sudden out of body experience for me.

“She’s an older woman.”

😳 Er…who is what now?
