There’s a thickness to the air, the smell of pent-up precipitation, and a glare in the sky when it just will not rain. I bake as the heat and humidity climb, cooking in our skin as I venture out to check the mail and walk the dogs. It’s summertime, y’all.

And I’m summering while fat.

So look out, there’s a new two-piece in town.

That’s right, I’m fat and wear a bikini.

It took me ages to accept my body, and I’m so happy I can’t even. After five decades, I’m elated to wear exactly what I want to wear when I want to wear it.

Yes, I’m also wearing a bikini while fifty.

It’s awesome.

If not now, when?

It’s not about being a badass, it’s about comfort. It’s not about showing off; it’s about showing up. And I only need to worry about what I think of myself. Nobody else. My belly, which had previously never seen the sun, now soaks it up and enjoys the gentle play of water over it. It feels so good — to be able to move. To be able to move physically and move the mountain that was the blockage of self.

I have had a surge of confidence of late, which has me trying new things and expressing myself in new, expansive ways. In addition to the…
