Sixteen Years
A Poem

Yesterday, I noticed a callus on my hand.
It is at the top of my left palm,
below my wedding band.
Calluses are caused by friction.
When I think of them, hard work, blisters,
and sometimes pain comes to mind.
It seems fitting, on my wedding anniversary,
to notice it under the symbolic heirloom
of my engagement ring diamond.
A humble callus,
making what was soft, tough, and durable.
The mark of sixteen years.
