I’ll be honest.

When times get tough, I need more self-care. When I shared with people what I was going through with my mom, they said, Don’t neglect yourself. Make time to care for yourself. If nothing else, so you can be there for her.

Did I listen?

It wasn’t that I didn’t hear their loving words or agree.

I knew I was under more than usual stress and wasn’t sleeping well or eating healthily. But I never stopped long enough to focus on myself. I was and still sort of am all about the next thing that needs to be done. And the next. And the next.

I never knew dying created so much work.

But it does if you’re one of the ones who takes responsibility for someone’s health care, finances, or both.

Before Mommy actually died, the focus was on her care. Making sure it was the best it could possibly be. Whether she was able to respond or not, in fact, when she stopped responding to us, the quality of her care became more important because Mom wasn’t able to tell us what she needed.
