I was saddened to hear of the passing of one of Football’s true legends this morning, the irreplaceable Sir Bobby Robson. This legend of the game lost his long fight with cancer and will truly be missed by those in the sport he so loved and dedicated his life to.

His managerial pedigree was proved at club level — notably bringing European success to Ipswich Town in the 60’s — but it was as manager of the England team in two stints between 1982 and 1990 that he made his most lasting impression on the game in my mind.

His was the England side that progressed to the Semi-Finals of the 1990 World Cup, the tournament that sowed the seeds in my 5 year old mind and instilled a passionate love of the many ups and downs of this sport.

Remaining in the game for many years afterwards, Sir Bobby helmed Newcastle United and took an advisory role with the Republic of Ireland national team before illness took him away from Football. Many great players, including a large contingent of those he managed in Italia 90 turned out for an exhibition match in his honour in July, an event I am pleased he was able to attend.

My sincere condolences go to his family, they can rest assured that his memory will live on for years to come.
