Announcing National Collecting Smiles Day

Let’s spread some cheer in the world

National Collecting Smiles Day — Vidya Sury ©

June 10th: You have been selected to create the next national holiday. What is it?

Did you know that you could actually register a national day with the National Day Calendar website at a cost? Apparently, many of the “national days” we now celebrate have been registered by companies and corporations as part of their marketing strategy.

Now, since I have been selected by Dawn Smiles to create the next national holiday (I can dream, can’t I?) I choose National Collecting Smiles Day as a continuation of my website’s tagline: “Did you smile today?” (Did you notice Dawn’s name? I am loving it!)

When I started my blog back in 2003, I didn’t stress over its name. I hoped to author books and thought it would be a good idea to keep my domain name and name the same. Picking a tagline took about two minutes. I started blogging hoping to make enough money to support underprivileged children and decided on “collecting smiles” almost instantly.

While I have not really changed the world (yet!) I do believe that many drops of water make the mighty ocean and no act of kindness is wasted. I have been doing my best to support my local welfare homes, schools for the blind, and homes for the aged as best as I can, via cash and essentials for daily living. You won’t believe the number of people struggling to survive out there.

If I can make even one person smile every day, I feel blessed. I consciously strive to do this through actions and words.

I dream of a world where each person pledges to do this — and collects smiles on a daily basis. Imagine the cascading effect of such a pledge!

Some trivia: World Smile Day is celebrated worldwide every year, thanks to Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who created the smiley face in 1963. The smiley is now a symbol of goodwill and good cheer.

Why am I sharing this? The smiley was created the year I was born 🙂 and that makes me happy!

Would you try consciously to make a positive difference for at least one person every day? It can be through a kind word, a gesture, or a smile. It does not have to cost anything. 💜

Key message: The world could definitely do with some healing now, right? So how about spreading some cheer via good thoughts, good words and good deeds on National Collecting Smiles Day?
