I have learnt a lot from my gay sister about self-affirmation and self-worth; two things I never really thought about growing up because…well, because a lot of people are brought up not valuing girls.

My parents and grandparents were from a world where being a girl and being boastful was considered a sin that attracts trouble. After all, pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall— Proverbs 16:18.

Happiness in girls was considered ‘conceited’, talking about oneself was considered ‘showing off’, liking oneself was considered ‘vain,’ talking of things you enjoy was considered ‘boastful,’ and focusing on your desires was considered, ‘selfish’.

All of these things together were considered, ‘pride.’ Therefore, I have a weird relationship with the concept of pride and am finding it hard to answer today’s prompt.
