Is My Return To 9–5 The Death of My Business Dreams?

Two weeks ago I completed my last of eight chemo treatments. I am so relieved. I feel like I’ve already started to get my energy back.

It is not the end of my cancer journey, I still have mastectomy surgery and then radiation to look forward to.

But it signaled a change … and an opportunity.

For many years I have yearned to work from home. The COVID lockdowns gave me this opportunity, and unlike some, I found that I quite enjoyed it. I still had a lot of interaction with my work team via Zoom meetings and calls.

But I’ve found the last 6 months very isolating.

Part of this I’m sure has been the treatment, and part has been our new location in the country. It’s taken me just that bit further away from friends and I’ve found myself missing the community that my office job provided. I have worked a few days in retail in the past couple of months, but I was alone in the shop. Interactions with customers were welcome but I still missed the banter with work colleagues.

A few weeks ago I started to apply for jobs via LinkedIn and Seek postings. I wondered how receptive employers would be to hiring me given the road still ahead. Luckily, the job market here is…
