June 3, 2022: You are a superhero for the day. What’s your power?

I admit not knowing much about the superhero culture. Though I grew up surrounded by thousands of books covering the walls of my parents’ house, and I used to read comics when I was a child, superheroes were not part of my stories.

Despite this sad realization, I’d like to exercise my imagination, so what would I do with my extraordinary power if I could take a day off to become a superhero?

First, I suppose I need to identify a nemesis. It stands to reason that if I spend the day doing good and fighting evil, I should locate an evil supervillain.

That’s easy for me because I detest bullies or anyone who preys on defenseless people or animals.

So, I’ll call my supervillain, ‘Tyrant.’ I’m sure we all know a few.

Tyrant comes in many forms, from playground bullies to belligerent spouses and from corporate executives to elected government officials.

[Please note: Any resemblance or reference to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.]

Tyrant spews his evil by replicating his bully mentality and injecting it, like a virus, into seemingly ordinary people who are then motivated to take advantage of the vulnerable.

On the day I received my superpowers, I was amazed by the devastation Tyrant was causing.

He was responsible for pitting the wealthy against the poor, majorities against minorities, mediocre souls against brilliant and well-intended minds, and dictators against peace-loving citizens.

The world was a freaking mess.

I had a massive job to complete, and without being melodramatic, there was no time to waste, the planet’s future was at risk.

My superpower was a potent antibody created in my heart and lungs to counteract bullying. I called it ‘Empathy,’ and it came in three varieties: Cognitive, Emotional, and Compassionate.

I mixed equal parts of each, donned my high altitude leotards, and began circumnavigating the globe much like a crop duster, introducing Empathy as an airborne cure for Tyrant’s evil.

As with most superhero endings, families reunited, political parties started compromising, and pet owners bonded with their animals.

It was a long day, and the final scene shows Tyrant displaying his best toddler temper tantrum because the antibody to cure bullying was a permanent solution.

Meanwhile, I return to the corner of my sofa with my favorite book and my dog, who, by the way, is named after a Greek mythological superhero.

Mission accomplished!

Roll the credits!

KEY MESSAGES:

I detest bullies or anyone who preys on defenseless people or animals.
When I witness those situations, I fiercely fight against ‘Tyrant,’ and I will never stop combating this evil.
