Summer’s Cancelled

How to remain positive when you’re sick

I try to not complain too much when I write, but I’m feeling sorry for myself & I’m not ashamed to admit it!

Navigating life with chronic illness is always going to bring uncertainty, higher odds of illness or prolonged recovery times & I accept this & focus on more positive things in life

However… sometimes it does get to me & this week has been one of those times.

In the UK the heatwave rolled in at exactly the same time as Covid arrived for me (again)! The fever wasn't fun but thankfully it didn't last too long.

But I have been SO very tired — lots & lots of sleeping for 7 days straight.

And I’ve missed out on all the summer fun! BBQs, lazing in the sunshine, enjoying ice creams & fun with my family. I have been holed up in my sick bed for a whole week with a serious bout of FOMO!

How I kept my spirits up:

I watched a lot of Television — something I haven't done for ages! I loved “The Thing About Pam” in particular — it was a great distraction.

I read on Medium when I could manage it & even managed to write a little.

I let go of expectations — This was crucial in not getting frustrated as I’m in the middle of building my business & there’s so much that I want to do. But, considering my coaching is focusing on balanced living & preventing burnout, I know it will wait a few more days; my health is more important!

I kept my mindset in check — I had been doing really well, I was feeling more confident in myself, organised & finding my voice publically. I understood this was just a setback & although I couldn't do what I needed, I kept on top of daily meditations & filled in my daily planner. This enabled me to set my intentions for each day, focusing on my recovery rather than stuff I thought I should be doing for my business growth.

When life feels unfair it can be very easy to let it impact your overall well-being. It can increase feelings of stress, anxiety & overwhelm, as well as a sense of isolation & loneliness.

It is okay to feel annoyed for what you may have missed out on, but by stopping these feelings from turning into resentment, you’re helping your body to heal whilst reinforcing how important you are!

Take the time that you need. It might feel like the end of the world at the time, but remember it’s temporary & what you can control is your response to the situation. I chose to go with it. I cancelled work & meetings, paused my schedule — including all of the business launch prep & switched off from it completely.

If I felt okay enough to look at my work I have only focused on stuff that’s fun & doesn't require much concentration. I created some lovely social media posts for when I return and prepped 2 Medium articles (Okay they took a bit more concentration, but it’s still fun 😉)

Key Message: Be kind & compassionate to yourself & know that it will all be there waiting for you when you’re feeling better.
