Fast food restaurants in hospitals? It’s a pet peeve of mine. We don’t have a McDonald’s in our largest hospital but a greasy spoon restaurant that’s just as bad or worse.

What kind of message do hospitals send when they host fast food joints?

There are at least 18 hospitals across the United States that have fast food restaurants within their walls, a third of which are McDonald’s. Yes, McDonald’s, the home of golden French fries fried in cheap oils and synthetic nuggets with little nutritional value.

On the other side, some argue these restaurants offer convenient options for hospital staff, patients, and visitors. They’re a quick option for hospital staff, patients, and visitors who may not have time to prepare their own meals.

They also argue that fast food chains boost revenue for the hospital.

Are Hospitals Sending Mixed Messages?

It’s something to ponder but that argument doesn’t hold water. Hospitals are supposed to promote healthy eating and physical activity. Having fast food chains runs counter to this aim.
