Before college, I introduced myself based on where I went to high school, where I was planning on going to college, what I was planning on studying, and the clubs or extracurriculars I was involved in.

During college, my introduction was based on my school, major, and internship, occasionally adding which extracurriculars I was involved in.

But what about now? I graduated with my master’s and no longer go to school. I have a full time job, but stating my job title and company doesn’t feel as accomplished as including all of the extracurriculars I used to be a part of.

A quick scroll through LinkedIn earlier in the year, I witnessed people who’d been a part of companies such as Google and Microsoft for over 10 years being laid off in a matter of minutes. How would these people introduce themselves now after making where they work their personality for over a decade?

They all felt lost and at no fault of their own. Being a part of an organization for that long and then suddenly being laid off is essentially the same as saying they lost a part of themselves.
