I hear footsteps climbing up the stairs to my bedroom. My husband is out of station on business. He’s not gonna return until two days later.

Who can be this?

I remove the pistol from the side drawer and hold it close to my chest to calm down my wrestling heart.

The door swings open, letting in a thin shimmer of light.

Words sink in my ears slowly —

“I’m… back… darling.”

I jump off bed and pull the trigger.

I go back to sleep after the blood-curdling screams of my husband dies off.

I hate unwelcome surprises at my doorstep.
