Flower Fields

With spring just a few months away, we can’t help but dream about all the best places to relish spring. There’s no better place to see spring in all its glory than flower fields. These colorful flower carpets are so breathtakingly beautiful, as if Van Gogh’s painting has come alive. Although the flower fields in Netherlands are most popular, there many places across the world, from Japan to California, where spring blossoms bloom for miles on end.

  1. Keukenhof Gardens, Netherlands

The flower fields in Netherlands have to top this list, obviously. The best among them is Keukenhof Gardens in the quaint town of Lisse. In springtime, over seven million tulip bulbs of 800 varieties blossom in this surreal garden sprawled across 32 hectares. These rows of rainbow-hued tulips stretch as far as your eyes can see and then beyond! Flowering season is typically during March, April, and May but it is at its peak in the last two weeks of April and first week of May.

2. Canola Flower Fields, China

For most of the year, China’s Luoping County is a quiet farming region. Come February, the region decks up with millions of blooming little canola (or rapeseed) flowers. During their peak in February and March, these vibrantly yellow flowers attract thousands of spectators from around the world. But they are most popular with bees! Following the bees, arrive the beekeepers who camp amidst the flowers. The region’s thickly forested hillocks peek through shades of sunny hues. It’s an otherworldly sight!

3. Fuji Shibazakura Flower Festival, Japan

When it comes to location, no flower field can match the Fuji Shibazakura Flower Festival in Japan; it lies at the foot of the snow-capped Mount Fuji. In April, the base area around this revered mountain gets carpeted by Shibazakura (moss phlox), a delicate flower blooming in shades of pink, magenta, and white. Acres of these tiny flowers with the blue toned Mount Fuji and its snowy peak as backdrop, makes for the most breathtaking landscape.

4. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, USA

As its name suggests, Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is all about poppies, acres and acres of wild poppies. These tiny beauties bring the park alive each spring from mid-February through May and set it ablaze with a fiery orange tinge. Make sure to visit in the morning; poppies are known to open up early morning and curl in late afternoon.

5. Hitachi Seaside Park, Japan

Unlike most other flower fields, Hitachi Seaside Park is a year-round wonder. Sprawling across 350 hectares (of which 200 are open to public), this humongous park is awash with a riot of colors throughout all four seasons. While all the flowers in the park are eye-catching, it’s the 4.5-million blooming baby blue Nemophila that’s the celebrities. These little stunners blossom in spring between April and May. In spring, it’s all about the blues — the blues of the flowers, the sky and the Pacific Ocean in the background. It’s ethereal! As if that wasn’t enough to tempt you, there’s an amusement park, cycling and BMX tracks, a forest athletics field, and BBQs amidst greenery!
