Using the golden ratio (1.618), your designs can be a more pleasant experience based on some fascinating mathematical genius. There’s a lot to unpack with the golden ratio, and it could take you some time to understand its true nature and use. Emily Esposito wrote a great piece over on the InVision blog to help you better understand it from a designer’s perspective.

Here’s what you can do with the golden ratio in design:

  • You can improve typography pairing & sizing with the golden ratio.
  • You can crop and resize images in a more pleasant way with the golden ratio.
  • You can size and layout content on a page beautifully using the golden ratio.
  • And finally, logos can be designed and be aesthetically pleasing using the ratio.

So if the golden ratio can make your designs a better experience, how might YOU be a better experience to others? Using the Golden Rule!

Treat others as you want to be treated.

What it means for you is having an attitude of caring, kindness, fairness, and respect for others. It means putting empathy to work not just in your design sprints, but in everyday interactions with people.

You can treat others as you want to be treated in a meeting, in the hallway, in a virtual Zoom meeting, in an interview, or at lunch. You can be courteous to others in traffic. You can overcome prejudices and stop criticizing others.

Just as using the Golden Ratio in design can make your designs more pleasing, so too can applying the Golden Rule in your life.
