Your words could be someone’s next big break. Two people smiling.
Your words could be someone’s next big break.

A Small Act With Big Implications

Asking someone to be your reference might feel intimidating. You might worry about imposing on them or doubt whether they’ll have positive things to say. You might worry about taking up their time or being an inconvenience. But think about it: your colleagues have seen you in action, contributing to projects, overcoming challenges, leading, guiding, and rocking your role at work.

They know your worth.

Giving someone the chance to speak on your behalf opens the door to new possibilities. Asking a colleague to be your professional reference is an invitation for them to help you shine. More often than not, they are more than happy to be the person to do this for you. People are more willing to help than we anticipate. Let them do this for you. A heartfelt, convincing, honest reference can be the deciding factor to tip the scales in your favor.

Don’t be afraid to ask. Tell them where you see yourself going. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Let go of hesitation and ask for that reference.
