Museum of Milan’s Duomo

Located in Piazza del Duomo, specifically on Palazzo Reale’s ground floor rooms, there is the museum dedicated to the Duomo of Milan, the third largest cathedral in the world (source: https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-largest-churches-in-europe.html) Given that it took more than 600 years to be completed, it provides a rich history. It opens daily, except Wednesdays, from 10.00 to 19.00.

Inside the museum, visitors can find plenty of statues, stained glass windows, paintings, tapestries, architectural models, terracotta, marble and plaster casts. Some of these were affected by the war years, while others showcase the artists’ long and patient efforts to reach the final result. The visit presents different styles of art, such as Gothic and includes a visit to the Church of San Gottardo in Corte.

Definitely a worthy visit for history and culture enthusiasts. Tickets are recommended to be purchased online here: https://ticket.duomomilano.it/biglietti/ we suggest the “Culture pass”, which allows those aged between 6–18 years old and University students-under 26 to visit the duomo, the archaeological area and the museum at a reduced price of €5 or just duomo+museum at €4. Audio guides are available.

COME SEE FONDAZIONE PRADA’S NEW FOLDING SCREENS EXHIBITION

The Fondazione Prada Museum in Milan is hosting a new exhibit: Folding Screens From 17th to 21st Centuries. Fondazione Prada was established in 1993 as an institution promoting reflection on contemporary art and culture. The current Folding Screens exhibition allows viewers to dive into and explore different cultures and years of history while questioning the hidden images portrayed in these furniture pieces consisting of several frames or panels combined into an elaborate work of art.

The exhibition text by Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, provokes questions regarding the purpose of the panels; they are a unique mix between a work of art and a furnishing accessory, between a sculpture and a painting. Find it on the two floors of Fondazione Prada’s main building, at L.go Isarco, 2, 20139 Milano MI. Get tickets online on the Fondazione Prada website for 15 EUR, or 12 EUR for students. This exhibit is open from October 26, 2023 to February 22, 2024.

“LEONARDO’S LAST SUPPER”

Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” painting was done on the wall of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, which was a former dining room located in zona magenta. The room where the painting is located is the main exhibit, and actually allows a group of only twenty five people inside for just fifteen minutes. During those fifteen minutes, no one is allowed to exit the room. This is in order to preserve the painting from further tarnishing, since it has slowly been fading over the years. It was completed in 1498, and the final restoration was completed in 1999. For those planning to visit this important work of history, make sure to book tickets online in advance as soon as you are able to. Standard tickets are 15 euros while students can pay 3 euros. The museum hours run from Tuesday through Sunday at 8:15am to 7:00pm. Some advice would be to check it out on a Tuesday to avoid long lines!
