Other top prospect performances:

Mets Triple-A RHP Noah Syndergaard, Triple-A Las Vegas: 6 2/3 IP, 7 H, ER, BB, 9 K — Syndergaard has been increasingly sharp with his command as the season’s worn on, something that really showed Wednesday. The Mets have been working with the 21-year-old on quickening his tempo, and he supposedly did a good job of that, which helped him bring all three of his pitches heavily into the fold against Round Rock.

Mets OF Brandon Nimmo, Double-A Binghamton: 3-for-6, 2 2B, RBI, R, K — Nimmo’s batting average took a hit in his first month or so at Double-A, but the rest of his game — which centers around tremendous on-base ability owing to a sharp plate approach — was still evident. The average has ticked up in August, during which he’s slashing .305/.380/.463 in 22 games. The 21-year-old has a unique profile offensively. He’s very effective at working into hitter’s counts, and if he can start doing more consistent damage when he gets there, the Mets might have a budding star on their hands.

Twins SS Jorge Polanco, Double-A New Britain: 3-for-6, HR, 3 RBI, R, K — The 21-year-old popped his first Double-A homer in 32 games on Wednesday, finally adding a little power to what’s otherwise been a promising first exposure to the Eastern League. Polanco is slashing .289/.336/.352 with the Rock Cats and could work his way back to Minnesota at some point in 2015 after getting a brief cup of coffee this summer.

Rangers 3B Joey Gallo, Double-A Frisco: 1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, R, BB — Gallo’s power has followed him up to Double-A, but the sharpened plate approach he showed early on with Myrtle Beach hasn’t quite carried over. After striking out at a manageable 26-percent clip in the Carolina League, Gallo’s striking out in more than 40-percent of his Double-A at-bats. The power is real and incredible, and he’s still crushed 20 homers in 64 games with the RoughRiders. But there’s still a lot of growth necessary from Gallo if he’s going to get that power to shine through at the highest level. Time, of course, is on the 20-year-old’s side.

Rangers SS Michael De Leon, Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach: 2-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R — The Rangers have proved that they see some value in bumping younger players up to exceptionally high levels for short stints when a need arises, and De Leon’s promotion to the Pelicans this week appears to be just that. The 17-year-old didn’t hit much with Class A Hickory this year but was one of the South Atlantic League’s youngest players and reportedly impressed folks with his makeup and tools. He’s gone 3-for-9 with the homer and double in two games with the Pelicans so far as he’s filled roster need.

Cardinals OF Rowan Wick, Class A Peoria: 3-for-4, HR, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, K — Wick is up to 19 home runs this season in just 69 games, a pace that would put him at 45 roundtrippers over a 162-game pace. The 21-year-old hasn’t exactly thrived since a July promotion to the Midwest League, though, slashing .218/.287/.427 in 34 games.

Blue Jays SS Franklin Barreto, Class A Short Season Vancouver: 3-for-4, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB — Barreto has done it all for the Canadians this season, slashing .316/.386/.495 while stealing 26 bases in 30 tries. The 18-year-old has added six steals in his past eight games, and is closing out the season with a .340 average in 22 August games. The infielder should hit the Midwest League next year as one of the level’s youngest players and appears to have the upside to grow into an elite prospect in the next season or two.
