Learning to be indifferent to what makes no difference is the goal. Not just my goal, but one set by the great Marcus Aurelius. The stock market didn’t exist when Marcus lived his Stoic life. However, many approaches to life created by the Stoics can be applied to the financial markets we currently have.

Meet the Stoics

Ever heard of Stoicism? The real Stoicism, not just ‘people who are without heart and emotion.’

Stoicism revolves around controlling thoughts and emotions. This is done by aiming for 4 basic virtues and living a rational life. Only by practicing Stoic beliefs daily, a virtuous life will be lived. The philosophy is rather old. The most well-known Stoic is an old Emperor of ancient Rome who wrote the book Meditations by Marcus Aurelius as a personal diary. It was never meant to be published.

Focus on contributions

Stoics are firm believers in focusing on what can be controlled and don’t put energy into the uncontrollable. Many influencers tend to know where the stock market or the crypto market is heading next. However, no one really knows what’s in store for investors.

As a Stoic, try to only focus on the number you add to your nest egg each month. Set your own pace and merely aim for this pace…
