From black charcoal ice cream to smoothie breakfasts, I’ve tried it all. They usually make for the perfect Instagram shot followed by a few hours starvation till the next proper meal. Some food trends make this world a better place , while others remain largely questionable to me. Let’s break down five of the biggest food trends of 2020 and see what they bring to the plate!

Healthy Eating

From probiotic breakfast smoothies to gluten free living, millennials are trying it all. These foods bring with them the promise of a healthy gut and an empty wallet. Replacing traditional flour, milk and snacks, while stocking up on oats, greens and natural sweeteners, millennials really are trying to go the extra mile to stay healthy and fit.

Black to Rainbow Food

Charcoal Burger with French Fries

This food trend seems to be growing consistently over the past decade. Vibrant desserts are the first things that come to mind when I hear the word rainbow. Though the colours in these foods add no taste value, they go a long way in making an Instagram profile aesthetic. Millennials don’t only add colour to their food, they’ve gone as far as to create black charcoal water. This one personally, is taking it a little too far for me as I sit in my happy corner with my pink and purple unicorn ice cream.

Sustainable eating

Sustainable eating is a food trend that’s booming and in my honest opinion making the world a better place. From meat replacement and veganism to zero waste kitchens, millennials are truly revolutionising eating patterns. Veganism is not a food trend for millennials, it’s a lifestyle choice and those who don’t make this choice are almost looked down upon by the other half. Most restaurants offer soya, jackfruit and other forms of supplements for meat on their menu. Professionals in the business are redesigning extra that would be thrown away about a decade ago into sides, sauces and drinks.

Beverage Industry

Red Bean Coffee

The beverage industry has transformed from a complement with food into an independent genre of creation and exploration. From dessert freakshakes, cold brew coffee and kombucha to the third wave coffee houses, the beverage industry is truly booming. In the age of crazy cocktails, Jai Feng from the podcast Millennial Things suggests that Red Bean Coffee highs can be a solution to millenial alcoholism.

Convenience is Key

Millennials use apps to get food to them, instead of going out to dine. There is speed, convenience and great discounts that millennials avail as the food joints are in cut throat competition to capture the market. Always on the go, millennials have packaged food into bars, bowls and jars that can easily be transported with them.

Is this as innovative and insane this generation can be? I don’t think so but only time will tell. Will we stop, take a breath and go back to basics or is this just the beginning? What do you think?

Most millennial food trends are exciting, aesthetic and expensive. Would I love to try them? Sure. And most of them I have. However, can I afford to make the switch to this kind of a lifestyle on my college budget? Not anytime soon. Things do change after college, right?
