Travel like a Millennial

The last trip three trips I took lead me to the most unexpected places: hanging off the edge of a mountain slope, in the grips of a wild monkey and crashing on the rocks of a rapid river. Am I an adventure junkie? The answer is that I am just another millennial, praying for this pandemic to end so I can so I can go for my weekend scuba trip. Millennials truly travel in ways that the generations before us would find unimaginably insane. Let’s see how millennials are making their bucket lists and travel plans!

Trekking

Millennials love stepping out of their comfort zones. What can be more challenging than steadily marching up a rocky trail to frigid temperatures. This is an active and inspiring hobby that many have taken up. Choosing a weekend camping under the sky instead of being curled up in a cabin with a loved one is honestly a choice I only trust a millenial to make.

Backpacking

Millennials manage to live out of a 40L bag for many weeks. Holidays are not about luxury for many youngsters travelling across the globe. They travel alone or in extremely small groups, exploring places and cultures (link podcast) at their own time and pace. Travelling solo with a backpack, living in hostels in a budget friendly solution to expensive hotels for travelers. Hostels are a popular concept globally, building communities and safe spaces for millennial travelers.

Travel bloggers/ writers

Travel blogging and writing is an industry that has grown immensely in recent times. Media companies and travel sites sponsor travellers to document their adventures in the form of films, photographs and writing. Other travelers create independent content and market it themselves to fund their exploration. These recorded experiences are used by travel companies and magazines to sell locations and packages to tourists.

Travel to destinations just for adventure

For many generations, people have gone to places and enjoyed the adventurous activities available there but it is only now that people go to destinations following adventure. People going to South Africa and Scotland for shark diving, Nicaragua for volcano surfing to Macau for bungee jumping. Sounds scary, right? I think you’d do it though.

Weekend trip

Friday night to Monday morning trips with friends, colleagues and partners are the norm among millennials. This is the perfect means to unwind and relax after hectic 40 hour work weeks. A budget friendly means to reconnect with yourself, your partner, your family and friends.

These are usual millennial travelling patterns. Do you relate? You will do some or all of these things, trust me. When you find the right companions and the right state of mind you’ll experience the insanity and the adrenaline rush of millennial travelling!
