Students Showcase Innovative ICT Projects, Win Seed Funding

ISLAMABAD: The National ICT R&D Fund handed out cash prizes to university students at the National Final Year Projects Competition held at Margalla Hotel in Islamabad today. Over 34 projects from all across Pakistan were featured at the event.
The first prize was awarded to two students from NUST PNCE Karachi, Zain Qaiser and Hamza Sadrudeen with an innovative project called the “Power Watch Dog.” The project is being implemented in partnership with K-Electric.
The first runner-ups from the Baluchistan University of Technology came up with the idea of a special helmet design fittingly called a “Smart Helmet” for coal miners in his region. The idea for the helmet came when one of the co-founders brother, a coal miner, got badly injured on his head during work.
The second runner-ups, Awais Ahmed Cheema and Hassan Sarwar from the University of Faisalabad came up with a design and simulation of fire tube boiler using PLC to avoid industrial boiler accidents.
The competition was held by National ICT R&D Fund as part of the National Grassroots ICT Research Initiative (NGIRI). The initiative provides funding for Final Year Projects (FYPs) to students, enrolled in ICT related degree programs at undergraduate level from both public and private sector universities/degree awarding institutes.
During the competition, 35 projects were selected by the participating universities to be showcased.
“All the projects are coming from life experiences” — Chief Guest The Minister of State for IT and Telecom Anusha Rahman remarked on the winning projects. The Minister also expressed the need for the future generations to learn to code.
Anusha revealed that Alipay will be soon available in Pakistan.
The R&D Fund announced to train around 1 million young Pakistanis in freelancing.
