Love this quote by James Allen from his 100+ year old essay As A Man Thinketh — “Suffering is always the effect of wrong thought in some direction.” It is an indication that the individual is out of harmony with himself, with the Law of his being.

You can distill the quote down to the following equation:
Unhappiness = Incongruence. The inverse of which is
Happiness = Congruence.
So much time spent looking for elusive happiness and it’s right here!
Want to be happy? Be congruent. Congruence is the new definition of happiness.

Congruence at work. You don’t like your job but you stay there anyways. You are not congruent with your inner self. I bet you are unhappy.

Congruence in love. You don’t like your girl/boyfriend but are afraid of being alone. You are not congruent with your inner self. I bet you are unhappy.

Congruence in education. You don’t want to study biology but your parents are making you. You’d rather study art history. Same thing.

The unhappiness compounds because people tend to be incongruent in multiple areas of life — career, school, love, friendships, etc. Put the one or two happiest people you know through the Happiness = Congruence litmus test and see what you find. Put yourself through the Happiness = Congruence litmus test and make some big decisions. You’ll be happy you did.
