The brakes you have on your vehicle are the most essential safety feature of your car. Your brakes will be the first thing you hit in an emergency. As a result, it is vital that they are working correctly so that they can save lives and ensure your vehicle comes to a safe stop. So, what can you do to make sure your brakes are functioning correctly, and how can you tell when they are not?

Key Indicators That Your Brakes Are Failing

  1. Grinding

If you hear a grinding noise as you press the brakes, this is a sign that your brakes or brake discs need replacing. Your brake pads will have a metal part, which serves as a wear indicator. When you hear this noise, it means your brakes are worn to such an extent that you will need to replace them. It is likely you’ll need to replace the brake discs too if you hear the grinding sound.

  1. Pulling to left or right

Correct braking will allow you to remain straight when you brake. If you find that the vehicle pulls to one side or another when you break then the brakes may be worn more on one side than the other, hence the pull. It may also because a brake calliper is sticking. If you do veer while braking, this could have serious implications if you brake in an emergency situation.

  1. Squealing

Another noise that you may notice if the brakes are failing is a squealing noise. This noise can be apparent if the brakes have been wet due to rain or standing water. The moisture on the brakes causes a build-up of rust which can cause squealing. However, after using the brakes gently afterwards should help the rust to wear off.

  1. Warning lights

If there is an issue with your brakes, then a warning light should appear in your car. When this happens, you should check your car immediately. Do not ignore the warning light or wait too long before having it seen to. Addressing the situation promptly may help to prevent a serious accident.

Make sure your brakes are always ready to stop by ensuring a regular service where the brakes are checked. Ask your mechanic about the condition of your brakes too, so you can be aware of any issues that may happen in the future.
