Earth Day is about showing appreciation to this place we call home by performing “Earth Friendly” activities. It is annual event celebrated on April 22nd that more than one billion people in over 192 countries participate in.

In the spirit of Earth Day, Mind Foundry has 10 ways you and your family can participate today:

  1. Plant a tree. We need trees to purify our air and planting just one will add to the health and wellness of our earth.
  2. Eat/shop local. Supporting your local businesses not only stimulates your local economy, but also reduces the environmental impact of products by reducing the distance they have to travel to reach you.
  3. Sleep early. Turn off all of your lights and electronic devices at an earlier time than usual to save electricity and reduce the emissions created by power plants.
  4. Wash laundry with cold water. Not only is washing in cold water better for you clothes and their colors, but it saves a ton of energy during the laundry process.
  5. Change your lightbulbs. Switch your incandescent light bulbs to Light Emitting Diode (LED) or Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) bulbs. These efficient light bulbs will last longer, reduce your light bulbs waste, and save you money.
  6. Join an environmentally friendly group. Joining a local group can help you live environmentally friendly and give you ideas and activities on how to take care of our earth.
  7. Go out and enjoy nature. Taking a stroll or a hike through your local parks can help you get in touch with nature and remind you exactly why we need to take care of our earth.
  8. Drink less bottled water. There are plenty of alternatives out there to drinking bottled water and, if you reduce your bottled water intake, you can reduce plastic waste that would otherwise fill up landfills.
  9. Walk/carpool/bike/take the bus instead of your car. By using a more environmentally friendly method of transportation, you can directly reduce the amount of pollution affecting our atmosphere.
  10. Educate your kids. Learning how to be environmentally friendly can help kids fall in love with our earth, enjoy nature, help reduce waste in school and at home, and inspire creative ways to take care of our earth!

This is only a list of ten but there are plenty of other ways you can participate in Earth Day. Just as we at Mind Foundry hope to inspire a love of lifelong learning through our unique science, math, and reading programs, Earth Day serves as a day to inspire everyone to take better care of our home world.

Can you and your children think of three unique ways to participate in Earth Day? We’d love to hear what’ve you come up with in the comments below!
