3 Ways to Live Your Life on Island Time

The first word that comes to mind when I think back to the three summers I spent living on a remote island in my early 20s is freedom. I lived for the day, not for what I could get done on that day. Living on island time means letting go of schedule-driven obligations. Anyone who has ever lived or vacationed on an island can relate to that feeling of pure surrender.

There is no official dictionary definition for the phrase island time; however, most references agree this is a complimentary term — referring to time spent leisurely. Island time is about so much more than clock value — its a state of mind.

Today, as a leader at a Fortune 100 company and mother of two, I can certainly empathize with maximizing time management to get as much done as possible. However, I often reminisce about the period of my life that I spent surrounded by the water’s peaceful tranquility. And how that environment encouraged even time-optimizers like me to slow down. But you don’t need to quit your job and move away to a remote location to attain the island mindset.
