The thing about our magic eight-hour sleep rule is that science shows it doesn’t fit everyone.

I found this out the hard way. I was exhausted without even really knowing it.

My job as a creator means I have to be producing content on a daily basis, which requires a lot of alertness and creativity. And for a few weeks this past year, I just couldn’t do it. I was grumpy, I was tired all the time, I was eating weird crap and making bad choices.

I blamed it all on hormones, my husband, burnout, and Mercury being in retrograde. It turned out I needed more sleep. I need more than eight hours of sleep, and I need them to be quality. If not, I start to feel it.

If you’re like me, struggling to do simple things and wondering why the heck everything is so hard, here are six signs it might just be your tiredness.

1. You’re too over-tired to sleep.

Counterintuitive, isn’t it? But struggling to fall asleep is actually a sign of needing more sleep sometimes. This was the most telling sign for me: at bedtime, I’d read a book, scroll on my phone, even clean my room — anything to avoid actually trying to snooze.
