Despite everything we are trained to do as paramedics, one of the most common tools I use is simply holding someone’s hand and listening — and in listening, you can learn so much about living.

I have heard stories from people at the end of their lives. I have seen them cry with regret, or smiles with contentment. I have treated children who readily say what they want to be when they grow up, and then later treat adults in their middle age who wish they hadn’t given up on what they really wanted out of life — and too late, for they are dying.

“I wish I had told her I loved her.”

“I wish I hadn’t quit.”

“I wish I had studied harder.”

“I wish I had taken that chance.”

“I wish . . .”
