Are You Doing Happiness Wrong?

This one happiness myth may be blocking you from the joy that should be yours.

You want to be happy. Who doesn’t? So why does happiness seem impossible to achieve?

Defining lasting happiness is challenging; worse yet, maintaining any lasting happiness is elusive. Why should that be?

Happiness does not work as you think. But with a more nuanced understanding of what makes for a good life, you can find overall contentment and moments of joy.

The Big Misunderstanding

You believe happiness occurs when a desire is fulfilled at or beyond your expectations. For example, when you are hungry, a plate of bland but nutritious food will sate your hunger. It will fulfill a need. But a delicious meal will make you happy.

The mistake is in seeing happiness as a decadent dessert. It looks good, so you desire it. When it arrives, you are excited. Then you taste it, and that first bite is heaven. The rich flavour, creamy texture and satisfying sweetness raise you to a moment of temporary ecstasy.

Unfortunately, that ecstasy can’t last. The second bite is never as good as the first, and each subsequent taste is less decadent. If you keep eating the dessert, there will come a time when you…
