If I don’t work, I feel lazy.

I’ve got too far to go in my career, too much to achieve. Work work work, guilt guilt guilt. If I’m not working, I’m not pulling my weight. If I don’t work, I don’t value myself. If I take a day off, I’m not hustling enough.

Sound familiar?

It’s a concept that has been around for centuries but now, it has a new name — Internalized Capitalism.

And it explains a lot.

Do you believe your value as a human is linked to your productivity and busyness levels?

This is the crux of internalized capitalism. We have been taught to believe that our value in society — our status and our wellbeing — is directly linked to how productive we are, particularly when it comes to work.

On a macro level, it’s why so many people worship the likes of Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. These are people who usually work incredibly hard and have achieved what our society likes to see — huge levels of wealth.
