Everyone Struggles Behind Closed Doors

We just don’t admit it.

We all have two lives. The one people see and the one people don’t see.

About two years ago, a friend of mine was filming a documentary. Featured in the documentary were several self-help tycoons. On the outside, they all look like they’re winning. They have the best-selling books and the private jets to match their diamond-studded watches.

During a break on set, one of the men left from plain sight. My friend ducked out to take a toilet break. While in the bathroom, he came across a popular self-help guru. He was in incredible pain and screaming in agony. It was difficult to watch for my friend.

He had followed this celebrity his entire life — and even created an online business that helped him quit his pain-in-the-ass 9–5 job — and now he was confined to the walls of a bathroom trying to give advice or say something profound to the self-help industries Yoda. The man said to him in a muffled voice in between grunts:

“You’ve just gotta keep going despite the pain.”

Hours earlier, this icon of America was in the hospital having shoulder surgery. Instead of resting, he was on set for a documentary and preparing to go on stage to deliver a record-long seminar.
