Finding your purpose in life is equal part epic, absurd, meaningful and ridiculous.
What is your life’s task?
That is the existential question that strikes fear in the heart of the slacker and the super-overachiever alike. It makes everyone feel that they aren’t doing enough if they aren’t personally solving world peace, writing an epic novel, and mastering sourdough bread. Worse yet, it fills even the most successful with the cold dread that all thier achievements may be climbing Missed-the-point Mountain.
Deep down, we all feel that we have a life task, one particular reason we were placed on this earth. Whether that reason is to write the next great symphony, invent a cure for social media addiction or perfectly organize your spice rack. We hope we are here for some reason, and we experience an existential dread of not fulfilling that purpose.
Since the universe failed to provide us with a comprehensive manual to life, a quick-star guide or even a barely legible post-it note, we are left to figure this life thing out for ourselves. Fortunately, a few wiser people have pondered this question, and we can jump to the good parts by learning to see life as a mythic journey…
