I’ve been writing online now for just over two years and I can honestly say that I’ve been lucky enough to carve out a healthy side income, in addition to my daily consultancy gig.
Thanks to good fortune and some unforeseen viral success, I’ve come to understand that bestselling author Bonnie Friedman’s words ring true, namely that:
“Successful writers are not the ones who write the best sentences…they are the ones who keep writing.”
There are so many people who say that they would love to write as a full-time job or just as a pastime or “side hustle”. But oftentimes the majority just dismiss the thought, saying that it’ll “never work out” or that they’re “not good enough”.
This happens in all kinds of creative professions. Visual artists, musicians, and dancers have the same kind of issues when pressed about their interests. They also don’t pursue it for the same reasons — reaching the skill level necessary to make it a career can be intimidating, so people don’t do it.
You don’t need to write like Shakespeare or any other author to make money and just enjoy it, though. Here are some reasons why you should write today, no matter your confidence or skill level.
Practice Makes Perfect
The first reason you should start writing today is that you get better with practice. Just like any skill, with consistency and time, your abilities will grow exponentially.
Famous writers don’t just wake up and make masterpieces, though many do have some degree of natural talent. Just like athletes, scientists, and famous artists, writers need to train and hone their skills.
Depending on the type of writing you want to do, that may include developing your research skills or your descriptive and figurative language, but what the skills are doesn’t necessarily matter. No matter what you want to write, the more you do it, the better you’ll get at it.
So, you may be thinking that it’s all well and good to just start writing, but you might not have the option to use your time to write for free. Your budget might be tight, and if you’re not making money doing it, then it’s not worth it.
Often, the main criteria for something being “worth the time” is that it has to make money. In today’s economy, that makes sense. If it’s really your passion, though, you may either need to write just what you want whether or not it will make money, or you can split your time between writing for a content platform or doing other freelance gigs and writing for passion.
If you play your cards right, your writing work may even match up with your interests, but if it doesn’t, there are plenty of ways to write for money. Having utilized the various blogging platforms at your disposal, once you have some work under your belt, you might be able to submit to magazines and other publications, as well.
If you start a blog about a niche interest, that’s another way to make money. If you have a large following, you can earn a lot of money if you use affiliate links or ads that rely on traffic to the page.
It Develops Your Imagination
Some people use art as an escape. Some knit, and others meditate to calm down and center themselves. Writing is basically art with words. Even if you don’t think you’re good enough to make money, you can write whatever zany and outlandish things you have in your head.
Did you think of a village with people with backward torsos? You can write about that. Maybe a fish crawled out of the water and joined a corporate accounting firm. That’s not realistic, but it can be real if you make it real through your writing.
The possibilities in writing are literally endless. Even in the bounds of writing for a company or other platform, you have the freedom to choose certain words and paint a picture through your descriptions. If you’re into something like Dungeons and Dragons or video game making, letting your mind wander and explode on the page can greatly improve your storylines.
It Can Provide Active and Passive Income
If you’re able to write for money, there are ways that you can make active and passive income. Active income is more obvious, which is just when you get money for writing articles, reviews, and other requested forms of writing.
Do you know how to do a specific kind of copy or have niche knowledge of another topic that can be related to writing? For example, if you know about computers, you can help tech companies create a website and the content on it.
However, the possibilities for passive income are large as well. If you have a certain niche knowledge as stated prior, you can create a class for others who want to do similar writing in the area that you do. Also, you could make a blog about the topic and collect ad revenue if your following is big enough.
If you’re comfortable with making videos, you can start a YouTube channel and talk about your writing experience for other ad revenue. Finally, you can make written tutorials and sell them to people digitally — it’s an instant download and income!
These are just a few reasons to get started on writing today if it’s something you’ve been thinking about. There’s almost no downside at all, especially if you can do it in your free time.
Whether it’s to build a side hustle, improve on hard and soft skills, or just to have fun, writing is an amazingly expressive art form that can do everything from sell products to painting whole mental pictures of a fictional universe.
If that sounds like something you want to do, why not get started today?
