He trudges up the hill with a sword in his right hand and a shield in his left. He’s scarred on the face. Each stomp forward is another battle won. He lets out a thunderous roar as he fends off an attacker. He finally makes it to the top of the hill, and there she is. His true love is awaiting him but stashed behind the fearsome villain. The ultimate battle ensues, and after nearly both perish in the process, the villain is defeated. The warrior’s triumph is sealed with a kiss.

This is bravery in the traditional sense.

It’s the prince saving the princess. It’s the warrior battling every enemy to get what he deserves. It’s a constant defiance of all odds, a demonstration of brilliant intelligence and fortitude culminating in victory.

But I don’t see bravery in this way. In fact, the bravest person I know is nowhere near a prince, but she has slayed a plethora of proverbial dragons in her day. Her bravery is new. It’s not traditional, nor is it what you’d expect. But these are the characteristics of what modern bravery encompasses.

She shares her emotions

The bravest person I know also cries the most.
