A lot of people wrestle with the idea of significance. We trip ourselves up with thoughts like, “Do I really matter?” or “Does what I’m doing even make a difference?” Like an annoying acquaintance who drops by unannounced, those thoughts usually come up when you’re elbow-deep in getting stuff done and already having a lousy day. It’s tempting to give in to that voice and let it derail you.

There are two ways to overcome this sense of insignificance. One of them requires a deep transformation of our beliefs and understanding of the universe. The other will help you right now.

The Deep Transformation

When you see yourself as some lone wolf, cut off from the pack, it’s inevitable that the ‘I don’t matter’ blues can creep in. To feel like you matter, the feeling of relating precedes. It’s through those relationships that you see where you fit into this world, where you belong, and what your place is in the world.

You don’t have to suddenly become the life of the party or pick up a whole new squad to feel like you belong. To belong, it’s sufficient to recognize that you already do belong.
