“To define is to limit.” Oscar Wilde

We go through our lives searching for something important such as an identity, a purpose, a meaning. What we essentially are trying, is to give a definition to our simplistic human existence.

Within our lives, we give definitions regarding social roles, such as being a mum, a businessman, an athlete, or considering our personality’s traits, such as confidence, fun, or seriousness.

The tendency to label ourselves stems from our desire to become distinguished from others. Thus, we create a sense of unique identity.

However, within this tendency lies a paradox; when you try to define yourself in any way, you self-limit. Why? Because you start to enclose yourself around the parameters of the label you’ve placed. That way you don’t allow yourself to improve.

So, to prevent that from happening, you need to realize the areas you define yourself and consciously stopping this bad habit. Here are the three common areas that we self-limit by defining ourselves.

1. Defining Self-Perception.
