How Your Personal Values Can Guide Your Career

We spend over 90,000 hours in work, so we need to make them count

Maya Angelou faced incredible challenges in her life, including racial discrimination, violence, and sexual abuse, the latter of which left her mute for over five years. Despite these traumatic experiences, Angelou’s personal values shone brightly as she emerged as a powerful voice in civil rights activism, public speaking, and literature. Best known for her inspiring words, Angelou captures several of her values beautifully in one of my all-time favourite quotes:

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.”

Angelou’s values kept her on the right path, guiding her towards her True North, despite the turmoil she faced on the way.

There are many other examples throughout history where personal values played an influential role. In his peaceful destruction of the Apartheid regime, Nelson Mandela valued freedom, equality, and forgiveness above all else. Mahatma Gandhi demonstrated similar values, including truth, non-violence, and social justice, whilst leading the successful campaign for India’s…
