Spending most of his adult life as a top engineering executive working for Google, Mo Gawdat had it all figured out. The fast cars, expensive houses, and all of the luxuries a working man could ever ask for.

By all accounts, Mo had made it. Not only was he rich in material wealth, but he also had a loving family — himself, his wife Nibal, and his son and daughter, Ali and Aya.

He was living the dream.

And then, on one fateful day in 2014, Ali, Mo’s son, went into surgery to have his appendix removed.

“It was the most straightforward of operations,” Mo recalls.

Yet, despite the simplicity of the procedure, fate had other plans. Ali would never leave the operating table alive. Surgical blunders took Mo’s son from him — and just like that, the two never saw one another again.

“I’ll be happy when…”

For many of us, our definition of happiness is closely tied to that of success. We believe that we’ll be happy when we become financially stable; when we find the man of our dreams; when we can finally retire.
