My Mommy Doesn’t Think I’m a Loser

When it comes to your self-worth, you might be listening to the wrong people

My mommy is right — I’m not a loser.

But in times of self-doubt, I’m less likely to listen to her than I am to a rando on the internet. They are the ones that have more sway over my self-worth than people who are, y’know, actually invested in me — like my own family or friends.

When it comes to our self-worth, we almost always listen to the wrong people.

And the results can be disastrous.

The self-esteem scales are rigged

It goes like this:

For every negative comment, you need five to counterbalance it. More, if you’re anything like me.

In other words — the scales are rigged:

Evolution has got a lot to answer for. We have evolved to weigh negative experiences higher than positive ones because back in the day, not paying attention to negatives could cause, well, death.
