During one rugby training session at school, our coach said something that has never left me:

“Top quality rugby is all about getting the simple things right, but that is where most teams and players fail.”

We often gloss over the simple things in life because, well, they’re simple. But that disregard usually has the opposite effect.

Take one of the best sporting teams in history, the 2008–2012 FC Barcelona squad. Managed by the legendary Pep Guardiola, players such as Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta mastered the simplest thing in football: passing.

Barcelona gave birth to the ‘tiki taka’ era of football, where they bamboozled teams by simply passing it around and through them exceptionally efficiently. It’s no surprise they won 14 trophies out of a possible 19.

When done right, simplicity can look like brain surgery.
