Social Media: The Struggle of Authenticity vs Acceptance

For you that’s screaming into the void.

You see something awesome, and on a whim you post something similar to social media — a silly tik tok, a vulnerable tweet, an inspirational story.

It’s positively received and you get several likes and encouraging comments. The next time you’re posting, you choose to do something similar. And with yet more positive feedback, you’re hooked.

You continue this way, but after five posts you start to feel off. While you felt like displaying that whimsical part of yourself that one time, you realize it’s not who you usually are. You have a choice: continue to gain acceptance or reclaim you authenticity.

A Paradox of Human Nature

As humans, we have needs that crave fulfillment. Some are pretty straightforward, like the need to eat and sleep, and some are more complex, even conflicting.

One such pair is acceptance vs autonomy. Growing up, we will feel this conflict. On one hand, we have a need to form a relationship with our parents. But on the other, we have a need to serve our selves. Belonging to a group is in conflict with proclaiming our individuality.
