Australia is an odd place.

My American friends think I live in the desert with Kangaroos and a “barbie.” (BBQ). They think I hunt and kill my dinner like Rambo. They think I say “mate” a lot, which I do. I grew up wearing a pair of budgie smugglers (men’s underwear you swim in, that leave nothing to the imagination).

Australia isn’t defined by landmarks or food. Australia is defined by the lifestyle we Aussies choose. You can borrow parts from our lifestyle to help you be happier, and not take everything so seriously.

Everybody Is Your Mate

Aussies say the word “mate” a lot. If I’ve met you for only 5-seconds then you are my mate. Everybody starts out as your mate, not your enemy. Mateship is a defining trait of Australian culture. What does a mate do?

Mates judge each other less.
Mates surround themselves with mates.
Mates help each other when they’re in need.
Mates chuck some food on the barbie and share stories.
Mates are just human beings sharing the exact same list of human struggles.
