In February 1988, William “Bud” Post III had only $2.46 in his bank account as he was then living on disability checks. But when this poor middle-aged man heard about the Pennsylvania State lottery with a winning prize of $32 million, he decided to try his luck.

As he had no money to buy the lottery tickets, he sold his ring for $40 and gave the money to his landlady and occasional girlfriend, Ann Karpik, to buy him 40 tickets.

Anna bought that for him, but not forty. Instead, she bought twenty additional tickets, totaling sixty tickets.

Then came February 24, when William noticed with sheer excitement that one of those tickets held the winning numbers.
