What Happened When I Quit Coffee After Drinking It Every Day for Years
How I “beat” the dreaded withdrawal.
Full disclosure: I love coffee.
I’ve run my business from coffee shops almost daily for over seven years. I love searching for the perfect cup of coffee and my favorite pastime is sipping on a delicious brew while reading a good book.
But a few months ago, I quit coffee cold turkey—and no, I didn’t replace it with tea, energy drinks, or any caffeine-like substitutes. Here’s why, what happened, and what happened when I finally reintroduced my morning joe.
Why I Quit
I hadn’t gone a day without coffee in over 8 years.
I drank about a cup and a half per day, usually sipping on batch brew—no cream or sugar—throughout the morning. After I moved to Europe (where batch brew is rare), I switched to one espresso in the morning and one after lunch every day. Then, once the pandemic closed all coffee shops, I started making moka pot coffee at home (which, hilariously, I’ve never seen until I came to Europe).
Fortunately, I never “abused” coffee—I knew myself well enough to switch to decaf in the afternoon. (The only times caffeine messed me up was when I asked for decaf and got regular, lol.) I never relied on it for…
