Goals are not specific and strictly defined. Simply put, it helps us identify the experiences we want to have based on our values — that is, our life goals drive our behavior. Goals are personal aspirations. Therefore, it will take different forms and take different amounts of time to materialize, depending on each person’s priorities and circumstances. But goals are important because they are the compass that determines the direction of our lives and gives us a sense of responsibility to achieve our happiness and comfort in order to live our best life.

We all have dreams and general ideas about our lives, such as what makes us happy and what we want to experience? Maybe some of us have a rough idea on how to implement it. But it’s important to set clear, achievable, and realistic goals. Because first, we’re going from “I wish I could learn Spanish” to “How will I learn Spanish?” That’s the goal, that’s the leap from dream to plan. Or as Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi puts it, “Goals turn an ordinary walk into a jog.”
