Before you go
A few observations about the key steps on a spiritual path to freedom.
First and foremost, you have to aim for truth and freedom, otherwise you don’t arrive at truth and freedom. Find a system, that suits you. Even several systems, or parts thereof. If you are unsure where to start, you may find some inspiration here.
Put your life in order. You cannot be a ruthless merchant, or violent bum (and the like) six days a week, and a spiritual seeker for one day. Well you can, but don’t expect “miracles”. You must be walking the path 24/7. There is no free ticket to paradise that can be bought for money, as well as you cannot move an inch, if you indulge your victim mentality. These are just two examples, but I hope you get the point.
Everyone is mentally ill. The sane even more so. If you don’t have a mental illness, you will develop one, as your self-image will dissolve. Remember, that until you “loose it”, everything that happens on the road is natural and ok.
Each and every community has its dogma, house politics, and rituals. Sooner or later this will be a hindrance. You will have to leave everyone, even all your loved ones, without knowing whether you will return (your departure will not be physical in nature, most probably).
Don’t shy away from hallucinogenic substances. I recommend Cannabis. It saves time, but it’s a trade-off, since you create another habit (also consider the legal implications, that go with it in most parts of the world). If you are a psycho-spiritual professional, this experience is a must.
Alcohol is useless. It drags your awareness down. Period.
Be thankful, if you are in contact with someone, who can push your buttons. It’s the best way you can “reality-check” your insights, and as they say, it is better to be a warrior in a garden, than to be a gardener in a war.
Austerity is just another extreme. Another indulgence. If it costs you more energy to maintain abstinence, than to satisfy (not chase!) a desire, it’s not worth it.
You will need a ton of luck, but although universe favors the prepared, it loves us all equally.
