On Emotions and Habits…

What people say about themselves is one thing but HOW we really are is another.

Take this for example.

Many people SAY they are not a people-person:

“I like to be by myself and don’t like partying, or social events or singing or any of the other thousands of social activities.

I just like to be alone.”

But too often, underneath all that is a little person yearning to be included; a poor child who wants to grab the microphone, throw a badass party joke, or be the centre of attraction in some way.

It’s only human nature. WE ARE EMOTIONAL BEINGS. We long for a connection and want to make the best of impressions.

But not just emotional beings, WE ARE ALSO CREATURES OF HABIT.

We are resistant to change and like to get accustomed to certain people and ways.

This is why you don’t change your church when you say you will, leave that job to explore elsewhere, leave that toxic relationship or leave any of the other 1000 things you want to “change”.

You like the “safety of predictability.” Your brain gets used to that cocoon.

I guess my point is:

• What we SAY we are differs from who we really are

• We are emotional beings and creatures of habit.

This is good for BUSINESS.

Being emotional, you can connect with people and whisper softly to the child/aspirations in them,

Being creatures of HABIT, you can keep them for as long as you want IF YOU HAVE GREAT CHARACTER AND DELIVER ON YOUR PROMISES.

P.S.: Human emotion is a broad topic that has recently caught my fancy. The psychology of emotion lets you understand why people act the way they do and how you can use that to your advantage. It is worth the study.

Books you can consider on the subject include:

  • Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini
  • Pre-suasion by Robert Cialdini
  • The New Rules of Emotional Intelligence by Rob Yeung.

I am currently reading the last and will give a detailed summary later.

Anticipate it.
