One of the categories at VIFF this year is Altered States; “This is where the strange ones come out to play, demanding that you follow their warped rules” says VIFF. Bitch is a strange one, that’s for sure!

If you are drawn towards women’s rights or retaliating against patriarchy, you will love this film. Or perhaps you are feeling trapped as a mother and wife, lacking in identity or purpose? You too will enjoy this film, if you can let yourself go to the bizarre that this satire provides.

The film opens with a desperate housewife who fails at a suicide attempt. She then decides to claim the basement as her territory — as a feral dog! This leaves her unfaithful spouse to contend with the domestic daily duties of their home and four children. It combines the mental health issues that are associated with repressed anger, with symbolism, story and some comedy mixed in. I believe it all comes together to deliver a great message, which may also leave you feeling a bit disturbed.

I applaud Marianna Palka for a well written and directed film.
